Understanding the Cost Behind Our High-Quality 3D Prints

We can all agree on how incredible the technology is regarding 3D printing. But if you’ve ever tried to get a custom model printed, you may have noticed that the price is not always straightforward. Why does a 5cm model cost so much more than a 4cm one? Why are full-color 3D prints more expensive than what you’d get at a local library? And Why do models of the same size sometimes have different prices? It's due to the differences in technology, materials, and precision required to produce high-quality 3D-printed products. In this blog post, let’s take a look at how we charge for 3D printing and why our industrial-grade prints are worth it.

Pricing is Based on Model Volume, Not Just the Size

If you are looking at a 3D-printed model, it’s very easy to assume that a small size difference won’t have a huge impact on price. However, the way pricing works in 3D printing is based on volume, not just height or width.

Here’s an example. A 3cm model may seem close in size to a 5cm model, but because volume increases exponentially, the larger model can require two to three times more material. This means that the more raw materials used, longer print times, and additional support structures during production will drive up the cost.

(The image above displays the same model in five different sizes: 3cm, 4cm, 5cm, 8cm, and 10cm in height.)

Industrial-Grade Full-Color 3D Printers

We know that not all 3D printers are created equal. While standard hobbyist or desktop printers can produce basic models, they lack the precision, color accuracy, and durability of industrial-grade machines.

At Little You 3D, we only use the most advanced full-color 3D printing technology available. This means:

  • Richer colors that won’t fade over time.

  • Stronger materials that result in long-lasting, durable prints.

  • High precision that captures even the smallest details.

If you’ve ever seen low-cost 3D prints from a library or small shop, you might notice rough surfaces, faded colors, or weak structures. Our technology ensures every piece meets professional standards, making it ideal for collectors, creators, and those who want top-tier quality.

Full-Color Printing Costs More and Here’s Why

If you want to add full color to your 3D prints, you know that you have to make game-changing methods. This includes more advanced technology and materials. Unlike single-color FFF prints, full-color printing involves layering fine color particles into the model, which adds complexity to the process.

Materials like Full-Color Acrylic Resin from Mimaki and Full-Color Sandstone from 3D Systems allow us to produce stunning, lifelike prints, but they also come at a higher cost due to:

  • More intricate layering and printing time

  • Higher-quality pigments for true-to-life colors

  • Additional finishing steps to enhance durability

While budget-friendly 3D printers might offer color options, they usually print in low resolution with a single color. Our process ensures deep, vibrant hues that stand the test of time.

Final Thoughts

3D printing isn’t just about pressing a button, it’s a detailed process that involves materials, precision, and advanced technology. Our pricing reflects the level of quality we provide, ensuring that every model is printed with industry-leading standards.

So, next time you see a price difference between two models, remember: size, material, and technology all play a role in the cost. When you invest in high-quality 3D printing, you’re getting a piece that’s built to last, with stunning colors and fine details that make it truly special.
